This workshop taken with Paper & Stitch will give you a fuller understanding of Cas' main processes.
A mixed media workshop using paper, textile, print, dye and stitch to create pieces based on the ‘land’ and landscape.
We will explore ideas related to creation of textile papers (Japanese paper and paste method), combine paper with fabric and look at different ways of texturing and colouring surfaces including sun printing if weather allows.
Methods place emphasis on the use of waste material combined with some specialist paper and dye techniques adapted from tutor’s own practice and experience of Japanese methods for use in a less conventional way.
What Students will achieve:
The pieces resulting from this creative exploration could be used as a starting point student’ own creative practice for textile based work and mixed media, collage, stitching, 3-D, books or sculptural work.
Student preparation:
As you work through the course you may chose to make reference to the environment and/or work from personal images, ideas and other materials you have collected for inspiration. Bring images for inspiration and one or two images of previous work.
Plan for the day:
Introduction to the course.
Paper Lamination: Layering of paper with found materials and fabric using techniques adapted from Japanese screen making and paper crafts .
This will also include a look at simple colouring methods (sun prints if weather allows or plant prints) and ways of changing surfaces of found papers and fabrics ( adding textures and colour with paints, pens and printing techniques,repeat patterns and use of text,) Integrating stitch as you progress, (stitch as a line)
We will close with a review looking at ways of working with the papers and textiles. (joining pieces together, patchwork, stitch as a mark, building towards your own developments.
