When using the language of COLOR, there are no boundaries, no rules,
no limits, and no restrictions.

Color has always been the universal
language of artists, and our keys to the kingdom.

Join me as we utilize strong vivid colors to express and expound.

We will work on larger-than- large pages and then turn those – Presto! – into an amazing artist book, using a couple of simple folds.

Learn endless low-tech ideas for creating a lavish, layered surface.

All of these ideas will translate into your work in collage, assemblage, altered books and journal pages.

Spend a full day, digging deep and stirring up the molecules.

For celebrants of color and layering…this process-driven
Class is for Seekers and Adventurers of all skill levels.

*If you have dietary restrictions, you are welcome to bring your lunch. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the premises.

Supply List

AN- next to supply means it is available at The Artists' Nook

(AN) 8 oz. Jar of white gesso

(AN) Your favorite mark-making tools (gel pens, Sharpies, colored pencils, etc)
Please include a china marker/grease pencil or a soft graphite pencil or
conte crayon.

(AN) Bring a selection of inexpensive acrylic paints, in a range of colors. Be sure to include black and at least one metallic in the mix. 10 – 12 colors will be fine.

If available, please bring a selection of water-soluble oil pastels OR NeoArt Watersoluble Wax Pastels (AN)

(AN) Bring 4-6 inexpensive bristle brushes, various sizes

(AN) 8 oz. Jar of acrylic matte medium, for adhering paper collage elements

(AN) Small jar of acrylic gel medium, for adhering heavier non-paper elements

A pack of index cards, any size

(AN) 2 – 3 sheets of colored/patterned tissue paper or dress patterns (for collage)

Masking tape

Roll of Paper Towels

X-acto knife or scissors

1 sheet of sandpaper, any grit

Palette for paints

Water container for brushes

Small selection of lightweight fibers, string, paper lace, twine – these will be used to create texture. Bring anything that appeals to you – nothing too dimensional.

For collage: We are going to work with the concept of creating art journal pages “on the loud speaker”, using large paper. (I will provide the paper) Look through your collage stash and find images that are symbolic, and have strong
significance for you. For instance, doorways, time pieces or clocks, staircases, houses, keys, clouds, whatever images that provide insight into your creative quest. Choose images that are potent, quirky, compelling. If you wish, you can also cut out key words from magazines, ads, junk mail, maps, posters, etc. You may prefer to generate your OWN words, using a word processor. Or, bring along a favorite set of alphabet stamps or stencils to imprint your artwork.

More about collage: I often like to work with the same image, in various sizes.
You might want to make several copies of the same collage element in sizes ranging from small to huge (11” X 17”) You can also try enlarging details of the collage elements (similar to looking at the gears inside a watch) Black/white OR color copies are fine. Do NOT bring ink jet copies, printed on heavy cardstock.
These are too difficult to work with, for collage. Don't go overboard with collage prints – a selection of 12 – 18 prints will be fine.
